TEMPRANILLO - CALIFORNIA
The Tempranillo grape originates from Spain, where it is perfectly adapted to the country’s hot, dry climate and produces some of the most profound, age-worthy reds on the planet. It is logical, perhaps, that despite a late start, California winemakers are quickly turning to Tempranillo as a wine that is a natural pairing with their terroir, as well. In California’s warm, inner valleys Tempranillo plantings are quickly on the rise, and while the wines tend to be a bit softer and fruitier than the Spanish versions, a certain similarity is still there. Like a great Spanish Flamenco dancer, our California Tempranillo is zesty, spicy, and right at home on the tabletop.
Electric and explosively flavored, Windborne Tempranillo is endowed with tremendous energy. Aromas of berry fruit, sweet leather and tobacco are deep and brooding. Our Tempranillo has a new world flavor profile but an old world soul, with flavors of black cherry, plum, raspberry and cedar on the palate. A whole range of spice notes and dusty tannins on the finish add further complexity to this super-expressive California red.
Shish kabobs on the grill, spicy beef burritos, roasted root vegetables, Manchego cheese, Jambalaya, Iberico ham.
ALL ACCESS CLUB
Inland California wine country is a dry, arid region where the dust stings the eyes and the land is parched. Viticulture has been present since the dawn of the state’s wine industry, and while a relative newcomer, the Tempranillo grape is well suited to this extreme landscape, sending its roots deep down into the sandy soils in an ever-present search for water. The grapes produced are small and the clusters tight, with an incredible skin-to-juice ratio.
The wines produced from this rugged fruit are correspondingly intense, concentrated and richly extracted, with dark color and savory aromas. Windborne represents the future of California wine, as seasons continue to increase in temperature, winemakers will increasingly turn to new grapes such as Tempranillo to succeed in making the style of wine that they prefer. So raise a glass of Windborne, grab some salty pig parts and do as the Spanish – Olé!
VARIETAL COMPOSITION: 100% Tempranillo
WINEMAKING PROCESS: It takes a brave soul to tend to the vines, under the hot inland California sun. The timing of the harvest is paramount – harvest too early and the wine is devoid of regional character, wait too long and the wines lose structure and focus. Fortunately, our winegrowers collectively have decades of experience working with the Tempranillo grape, and Windborne is aged in oak after harvest to further refine its expression.
