PINOT GRIGIO - CALIFORNIA
With our wine advent calendar selections, we aim to provide to you a mix of familiar and exotic, wines that you already know and love, and wines that will surprise you. We chose New Heights Pinot Grigio for the second category – not much Pinot Grigio is made in California, but when done right, it gives Italy a serious run for its money. While featuring many of the same traits as its Italian counterparts, California Pinot Grigio offers a level of exuberant fruit and textural smoothness that distinguish them and ensure a unique expression, rather than a carbon copy. New Heights aims to show just that – the previously unattained pinnacle of quality that California can attain with this beloved grape variety.
New Heights opens with aromas of citrus, apple, flowers and honey, with a smoky edge. Juicy, bright and fresh, this is a serious, complex Pinot Grigio of remarkable purity and focus. On the palate, New Heights is crisp and lively, with nectarine, green apple and lemon zest flavors, complicated by dried herbs and a distinct salinity. A textural wine, with a restrained sweetness makes it flexible and friendly at the dinner table.
Mango lime grilled chicken, mild, creamy curries, marinated octopus, artichoke salad, steamed mussels, soft, creamy cheeses such as Brie.
PINOT GRIGIO GOODNESS
Walking through California’s Pinot Grigio vineyards, one is amazed that white wine is produced from these grapes, whose skins are not yellow-colored as other white grapes, but actually present a lovely purple-pink hue. Indeed, for many years Pinot Grigio was regarded as a frustrating grape to grow due to the fact that, without experience and special tools in the cellar, the wines produced would be often dark and bitter. It wasn’t until the 1970’s when, during a period of unprecedented investment and growth in their wine industry, the Italians invented the modern Pinot Grigio style, that this grape achieved the new heights with which its associated today.
Today’s California versions fall into two stylistic categories – Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris. Despite being made from the same grape, the wines are remarkably distinct, with the former style focused on crisp fruit and a food friendly verve, and the latter on textural roundness and richness. Both wines are great for their own reasons, but with New Heights we wanted to surpass the stereotype that many consumers have of Pinot Grigio as a simple, thin and watery wine. New Heights have been reached, and Pinot Grigio’s ceiling has been lifted.
